Blanche of Anjou 1283 – 1310
Biography
Blanche of Anjou stepped into queenship as the wife of King James II of Aragon, bringing the prestige of Europe’s most formidable noble dynasty to the Mediterranean throne. Born into Angevin privilege in 1283, she embodied the high-stakes game of medieval royal marriage—where political alliances and dynastic ambitions played out across kingdoms. Her position as Queen consort placed her at the heart of Aragonese court intrigue during a pivotal era of Mediterranean power struggles.
Yet Blanche’s reign proved heartbreakingly brief. At just twenty-seven, she died on October 21, 1310, from puerperal complications following childbirth—a tragedy that claimed countless royal and common women alike in this era. Though her time on the throne lasted mere years, her legacy as Queen of Aragon etched itself into Spanish medieval history. She was laid to rest at Santes Creus monastery with full royal honors, her memory preserved in the sacred stones of Catalonia.
