Carlo Emanuele III of Sardinia

Biography

Carlo Emanuele III ruled one of Europe’s most strategically positioned kingdoms during history’s most cutthroat century. For over seven decades, this Turin-born monarch navigated the treacherous waters of eighteenth-century Italian politics, holding Sardinia’s throne through an era of constant European realignment. His reign demanded the diplomatic finesse of a chess master—balancing power plays between rival empires while keeping his kingdom not just intact, but relevant.

From his birthplace in Turin through his final years, Carlo Emanuele III remained deeply embedded in Piedmont’s fabric, a king who never strayed from his roots. When he died in February 1773 at seventy-one, he left behind seven decades of service to a realm that demanded everything. The Basilica of Superga became his eternal home—a monument befitting a ruler who had made Turin the epicenter of his world and his vision for Sardinia’s place in European power.
