Carlo I Tocco

Biography

Carlo I Tocco was born on January 1, 1301, on the island of Cephalonia, entering a world of shifting Mediterranean powers and dynastic ambitions. He would go on to become Despot of Epirus, a position of considerable authority and influence in the fragmented landscape of fourteenth and fifteenth-century Greece. His life spanned 128 years, a remarkable longevity for his era that allowed him to witness and shape the political currents of his region across multiple generations.

As Despot, Carlo I Tocco held one of the most prestigious titles available to regional rulers of his time. Epirus, with its strategic location in northwestern Greece, represented an important territory whose control carried both prestige and responsibility. Throughout his lengthy reign, he navigated the complex relationships between the declining Byzantine Empire, rising Ottoman power, and various Italian and Balkan interests competing for dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Carlo I Tocco passed away on July 13, 1429, in Epirus, having lived through nearly thirteen decades of profound historical transformation. His legacy endured through his family’s continued rule in the region, and his name remained significant in the annals of Epirote history as a figure who maintained ducal authority during an era of tremendous change and uncertainty.
