Cassius Dio

Biography

Cassius Dio commanded the twin pillars of power in the Roman Empire—the senator’s seat and the historian’s pen. Born in 150 in Nicaea, this Greco-Roman intellectual rose through the empire’s ranks during its most turbulent decades, witnessing emperors rise and fall while meticulously documenting it all. His unflinching historical accounts became an invaluable window into the second and third centuries, capturing the political upheaval and cultural shifts that defined the era.

A man of the eastern Mediterranean, Dio embodied the cosmopolitan brilliance of his age. His dual life as statesman and scholar allowed him to observe history from the inside—navigating court intrigue while simultaneously preserving it for posterity. He spent his final years in his native Nicaea, drawing on decades of experience and observation to craft his legacy.

When Dio died on January 1, 235—exactly eighty-five years after his birth—he left behind something far more enduring than political influence: a meticulous historical record of an empire in transformation. His work remains a cornerstone for understanding Rome’s most consequential century, proving that the truest power lies not in a throne, but in the words we leave behind.
