Biography

Born into Milan’s powerhouse Sforza dynasty in 1463, Caterina Sforza commanded Renaissance Italy with the steel of a born ruler. As Lady of Imola and Countess of Forlì, she wielded genuine political authority in an era when few women held real power—and she refused to be a mere ornament. She navigated the treacherous machinations of Italian regional politics with shrewd determination, earning her place as one of the Renaissance’s most formidable operators.

Sforza’s life was cut short when pneumonia claimed her in Florence on June 7, 1509, at just forty-six. But her legacy endured far beyond her years: a woman who ruled territories, shaped alliances, and proved that noble birth meant nothing without iron resolve. She was buried at the convent of Murate in Florence, a final resting place that honored her station and her unflinching grip on power during one of history’s most transformative eras.
