Charles VI of France

Biography

Charles VI inherited the French throne at just twelve years old, thrust into one of Europe’s most demanding roles during a turbulent medieval era. His forty-two-year reign spanned some of France’s most pivotal moments, as the young king navigated relentless political intrigue, military conflict, and the pressures of maintaining his kingdom’s power across a continent in flux. From his coronation in 1380 through decades of rule, Charles bore the weight of steering France through an age of profound transformation.

The monarch’s tenure tested his resolve constantly as he managed the complex dynamics of medieval European politics. Yet his commitment to his realm never wavered, even as circumstances shifted beneath him. When Charles VI died in Paris on October 30, 1422, at fifty-three, he closed out more than four decades of active kingship. Malaria claimed the aging sovereign, who was honored with burial at the Basilica of Saint-Denis—France’s most sacred resting place for monarchs.
