Charlotte Berend-Corinth 1880 – 1967
Biography
Charlotte Berend-Corinth was born on May 25, 1880, in Berlin, Germany, during a period of remarkable artistic and cultural flourishing in the city. She developed her talents as a painter, becoming part of Berlin’s vibrant artistic community in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her work and life were deeply rooted in German culture, yet she would face the profound upheaval that defined her era.
As Nazi ideology spread across Germany, Charlotte made the difficult decision to emigrate, leaving behind her homeland to preserve her freedom and safety. Like many Jewish artists and intellectuals of her time, she chose to build a new life abroad, eventually settling in New York City. This transition represented both a loss and an act of courage—abandoning the familiar to seek refuge and continue her artistic pursuits in America.
Charlotte spent her final years in New York, where she lived until her death on January 10, 1967. Though her life spanned nearly nine decades of tremendous change—from imperial Berlin to mid-century America—she maintained her connection to her roots. She was eventually laid to rest at Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf in Germany, returning to the soil of her birth in a final homecoming.
