Chris Cornell 1964 – 2017
Biography
A Seattle native born into the city’s golden era of musical innovation, Chris Cornell emerged as one of alternative rock’s most commanding voices. With a four-octave range that could soar, shatter, and seduce in equal measure, he became the sonic architect of grunge’s most experimental moments. Cornell didn’t just ride the ’90s wave—he shaped it, channeling raw emotion through projects that refused to stay in one lane, from Soundgarden’s heavy, psychedelic thunder to Audioslave’s genre-bending fusion.
His influence extended beyond albums and stadium shows. Cornell was a restless artist who treated each project as a new frontier, collaborating across genres and constantly reinventing his sound while maintaining an unmistakable vocal signature. Whether fronting supergroups or tackling solo work, he proved that alternative rock could be both brutally heavy and vulnerably intimate.
When Cornell passed away in May 2017 at 52, the music world lost one of its most fearless voices. His legacy rests at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, but his impact reverberates through generations of musicians who witnessed what true artistic ambition sounded like.
