Biography

Christopher Hogwood revolutionized how the world heard Bach and Handel. The English conductor and harpsichordist became a towering figure in historically informed performance, proving that old music didn’t need romantic swooning—it needed scholarship, precision, and fire. His dual mastery as both keyboard virtuoso and conductor gave him rare authority to reshape orchestral interpretation from the podium, armed with decades of musicological research.

Born in Nottingham in 1941, Hogwood built a career that refused easy categorization. He didn’t just play the harpsichord or conduct orchestras; he interrogated every score, chasing period authenticity with the rigor of an archaeologist. His work bridged the dusty study and the concert hall, making baroque music feel urgent and alive rather than museum-bound. Whether at the keyboard or leading an ensemble, his interpretations crackled with intellectual conviction.

Based in Cambridge for much of his later life, Hogwood remained a restless scholar-musician until his death in September 2014. He left behind recordings, students, and an entire generation of musicians trained to listen deeper.
