Biography

Chungmok was a king of the Goryeo dynasty, one of Korea’s most significant medieval kingdoms. Born on May 23, 1337, he came of age during a period of considerable change in Korean history. Though his life was destined to be brief, Chungmok carried the responsibilities of royal leadership during his formative years as a member of the Goryeo royal family.

Chungmok’s reign, like that of many young monarchs, took place within complex political circumstances. As king of Goryeo, he held an important place in the lineage of rulers who shaped Korean culture and governance during the medieval period. His youth meant that much of his authority would have been exercised alongside regents and court officials who guided state affairs.

On January 2, 1349, Chungmok died in Kaesong, the capital of Goryeo, at just eleven years of age. His death resulted from disease, a common threat to people of all stations during this era. Though his time on the throne was limited, Chungmok remains part of the historical record of the Goryeo dynasty, a reminder of the young lives lost to illness in medieval Korea. His legacy endures through the annals of Korean royal history.
