Coloman 1070 – 1116
Biography
Born into royalty in medieval Hungary’s ancient seat of power, Coloman ruled the Hungarian kingdom during one of its most pivotal eras—the early twelfth century. Rising to the throne at a time when Europe’s borders were in constant flux, this king left an indelible mark on Hungarian governance and shaped the kingdom’s trajectory during a transformative period. Coloman’s reign became a defining chapter in medieval Hungarian history, cementing his legacy as a significant figure in the region’s political landscape.
Coloman never strayed far from his birthplace of Székesfehérvár, the royal city that symbolized Hungarian power and prestige. When he died in 1116 at forty-six, he was laid to rest at Székesfehérvár Basilica—a final resting place befitting a monarch who had devoted his life to his kingdom. His return to the basilica closed a circle that began with his birth there decades earlier, leaving behind a reign that would echo through Hungarian history for centuries to come.
