Biography

Conrad Veidt commanded the screen with an intensity that made him unforgettable. Born in Berlin’s golden age, this German-born actor became a virtuoso of silent and sound cinema, wielding his striking presence and dramatic flair across stages and studios from Europe to Hollywood. His career embodied the turbulent journey of twentieth-century entertainment itself, as he navigated the seismic shifts reshaping both the industry and the continent.

Veidt’s performances burned with psychological depth—the kind that defined an era of cinema. He moved fluidly between the theatrical traditions of Weimar Germany and the emerging demands of international film, ultimately establishing himself as a commanding force in 1930s and 1940s Hollywood. His ability to bring raw intensity to complex characters made him an indispensable presence in the golden age of cinema.

On April 3, 1943, Veidt died suddenly in Hollywood at fifty, a myocardial infarction cutting short a career still in full stride. He was cremated at Golders Green in London—a final resting place reflecting a life lived across continents. Though his years were finite, his influence on performance art proved remarkably enduring.
