Cosimo III de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany 1642 – 1723
Biography
Born into Florence’s most formidable dynasty in 1642, Cosimo III de’ Medici inherited one of Renaissance Italy’s most coveted thrones as Grand Duke of Tuscany. For decades, he stewarded the Medici legacy during a pivotal era when Florence’s cultural authority still commanded European attention. While empires shifted and the old world transformed around him, Cosimo maintained his family’s grip on power and prestige, keeping alive the Medici tradition of championing the arts and intellectual pursuits that had defined Florence for generations.
Cosimo’s reign stretched across more than fifty years—a marathon of statecraft that witnessed the twilight of one age and the dawn of another. His leadership ensured Tuscany remained a cultural force even as Italy’s political landscape fractured and reformed. When he died in Florence on October 31, 1723, at over eighty years old, he’d outlived most of his contemporaries. Laid to rest in the Medici Chapels alongside the titans of his dynasty, Cosimo III closed a remarkable chapter in one of history’s most storied families.
