Biography

Cristina Calderón was born on May 24, 1928, in Puerto Williams, a remote settlement in southernmost Chile. She carried within her the heritage of the Yaghan people, an indigenous culture with deep roots in the Tierra del Fuego region. Throughout her life, Cristina became a living connection to her people’s rich history and traditions, serving as a keeper of knowledge that stretched back through generations.

As the last full-blooded member of the Yaghan people and the final known speaker of the Yaghan language, Cristina held an extraordinary place in human history. Her voice preserved not merely words, but an entire worldview—the wisdom, stories, and way of life of a people who had thrived in one of the world’s most challenging environments for thousands of years. She embodied the resilience and cultural identity of the Yaghan nation.

On February 16, 2022, Cristina Calderón passed away at Hospital Clínico de Magallanes, taken by COVID-19. With her passing, an irreplaceable link to the Yaghan language and heritage was severed. Her life stands as a testament to cultural endurance and the profound loss when indigenous voices are silenced. Cristina’s memory honors not only her personal journey but the entire Yaghan legacy she so faithfully represented.
