Biography

Cy Twombly rewrote the rules of abstraction with scrawled lines and gestural marks that looked reckless but felt intimate. The Lexington-born artist—born Edwin Parker Twombly Jr. in 1928—became a master of controlled chaos, layering delicate strokes and washes of color across canvas and paper in ways that seemed to blur the line between drawing and painting, spontaneity and precision. His distinctive visual language, blending modernist abstraction with classical allusions, made him a towering figure in twentieth-century art.

For decades, Twombly worked across painting, sculpture, and photography with restless innovation, creating work that felt like visual poetry—meditative, sensual, alive with tension. He settled in Rome, where the city’s ancient history seeped into his practice, infusing his art with layers of memory and meaning. Viewers encountered his paintings as invitations to contemplate color, gesture, and the raw energy of mark-making itself.

Twombly died in Rome on July 5, 2011, at eighty-three, following a cancer diagnosis. His death closed a singular chapter in modern art history, but his legacy—radical, uncompromising, endlessly influential—continues reshaping how artists and audiences understand abstraction itself.
