David Ben-Gurion 1886 – 1973
Biography
Born in Poland to a world without a Jewish state, David Ben-Gurion became the visionary who made one real. The fiery Zionist leader transformed from activist to architect, channeling decades of unwavering conviction into the creation of modern Israel. His was a life spent building from nothing—institutions, infrastructure, a nation’s soul.
As Prime Minister during two pivotal stretches (1948-1953 and 1955-1963), Ben-Gurion steered Israel through its most fragile years, establishing the government framework and military strength that would define the young state. His tireless leadership during these formative decades set the nation’s trajectory, turning Zionist dream into geopolitical reality.
On December 1, 1973, Ben-Gurion died of a stroke at 87, his life’s work secured. He was buried at Midreshet Ben-Gurion in the Negev—a final resting place that spoke volumes about a man who’d spent everything building a homeland. His fingerprints remain everywhere in Israel’s foundational story.
