Biography

David Rizzio was born on January 1, 1533, in Pancalieri, Italy, before establishing himself in Scotland as a skilled musician and trusted advisor to the royal court. His talents brought him to the service of Mary, Queen of Scots, where he became her secretary for French correspondence, a position of considerable responsibility and influence. His fluency in languages and diplomatic acumen made him valuable to the Queen during a turbulent period of Scottish history.

On March 19, 1566, Rizzio’s life was cut short by violence in Edinburgh. His murder marked a significant moment in Scottish political history, reflecting the dangerous intrigues and factional conflicts that surrounded the royal household. He was laid to rest at Canongate Kirkyard in Edinburgh, where his grave stands as a final testament to his service and the tragic circumstances of his death.

Though his time in Scotland was brief, Rizzio’s legacy endured as a figure whose life and death became intertwined with some of the most dramatic events of Mary, Queen of Scots’ reign. His contributions as a musician and diplomat remain part of the historical record of sixteenth-century Scotland.
