Biography

Donald “Duck” Dunn was Memphis royalty—a bass guitarist whose groove-heavy playing became the backbone of some of rock and soul music’s most iconic recordings. Born in Tennessee in 1941, Dunn didn’t just play bass; he redefined what the instrument could do, anchoring tracks with a swagger that made singers and bands better. Beyond the four strings, he proved himself a savvy producer and songwriter, demonstrating the rare ability to elevate talent from behind the mixing board as masterfully as he did onstage.

For decades, Dunn remained tethered to Memphis, the city that birthed his genius and shaped his unmistakable sound. His fingerprints were everywhere—on albums, in studios, in the DNA of American music—marking him as one of the most respected session and touring musicians of his era. When Dunn passed away in May 2012, the music world lost a quiet revolutionary. He was returned to Memphis, laid to rest at Memorial Park, where his legacy continues to resonate through every song he touched.
