Biography

Malcolm John Rebennack Jr.—the virtuoso known to the world as Dr. John—emerged from New Orleans’ steamy musical crucible to become one of America’s most inventive artists. With his fingers dancing across the keys and his growling, soulful voice commanding attention, Dr. John pioneered a genre-defying sound that fused jazz, blues, funk, and rock into something entirely his own. The Crescent City’s rich musical DNA flowed through every performance, yet he never simply recycled tradition—he transformed it.

From his earliest recordings through decades of touring, Dr. John captivated audiences with his ability to straddle multiple worlds: the church and the street corner, the recording studio and the live stage, the past and the future. His distinctive keyboard style and fearless compositional approach made him a musician’s musician, earning him respect across generations and genres. He remained an unmistakable voice in American music, rooted in his hometown while speaking to listeners everywhere.

Dr. John died on June 6, 2019, at 77, from a heart attack—his life ending in the city that made him. He was laid to rest at Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1, among New Orleans’ immortals, a final testament to an artist who never left home, even when the world came calling.
