Du Yuesheng 1888 – 1951
Biography
Du Yuesheng was born on August 22, 1888, in Gaoqiao, a village in China’s Jiangsu Province. Over the course of his lifetime, he became one of the most influential and complex figures in early twentieth-century Chinese history. His rise from humble origins to prominence reflected both the opportunities and dangers of a nation undergoing rapid transformation during a period of significant social and political upheaval.
Throughout his adult years, Du Yuesheng wielded considerable power and influence across multiple domains of Chinese society. His activities and connections made him a notable—if controversial—figure whose impact extended far beyond his immediate circle. He maintained his influence through the turbulent decades of the Republic era, navigating the intricate relationships between business, politics, and organized interests.
In his later years, Du Yuesheng relocated to British Hong Kong, where he spent his final days. He passed away on August 16, 1951, just six days before his sixty-third birthday. Following his death, he was interred at the Tomb of Du Yuesheng in Xiushan Village, Taiwan, a location that would serve as his final resting place and a historical marker of his life’s journey.
