Édouard Michelin 1963 – 2006
Biography
Édouard Michelin inherited one of the world’s most iconic industrial empires—the legendary French tire manufacturer that bore his family’s name. Born into manufacturing royalty in Clermont-Ferrand in 1963, he stepped into the demanding role of leading a global powerhouse with centuries of innovation and prestige behind it. As a member of the Michelin dynasty, he carried the weight of a legacy built on relentless engineering excellence and the kind of corporate influence that shaped entire industries.
On May 26, 2006, Michelin drowned off the coast of Île-de-Sein, a tragic end that stunned France’s business world and left the tire empire navigating unexpected succession challenges. He was laid to rest in Orcines, his family’s region in the Puy-de-Dôme. Though his time at the helm was marked by the complexities of managing a multinational conglomerate in an ever-shifting global economy, Michelin remained a fixture of French industrial prestige until his untimely death at age 42.
