Biography

A Scottish aristocrat who shaped modern diplomacy, Eric Drummond rose to international prominence as the League of Nations’ first Secretary General—the man tasked with building the world’s first real attempt at global peacekeeping. Born into privilege in 1876, Drummond transformed his diplomatic talents into something far larger than hereditary status, steering the fledgling organization through the treacherous interwar years when the stakes for preventing another catastrophic war couldn’t have been higher.

His tenure defined an era of optimistic multilateralism, as Drummond worked to establish the League as a credible force for cooperation among nations. Though history would later reveal the organization’s limitations, his tireless navigation of complex international politics and commitment to collective security marked him as a pioneering architect of twentieth-century diplomacy—a visionary who believed, perhaps against the odds, that nations could resolve disputes through reason rather than force.

Drummond retired to West Sussex, where he spent his final years reflecting on a career devoted to preventing the very conflicts that had haunted his generation. He died in 1951 at seventy-five, leaving behind a legacy as one of diplomacy’s great idealists and a founder of the institutional frameworks that would eventually evolve into modern international governance.
