Ernst Hanfstaengl 1887 – 1975
Biography
Ernst Hanfstaengl spent nearly nine decades navigating Munich’s glittering art world and business circles, establishing himself as a shrewd dealer and cultural insider during one of Europe’s most turbulent eras. Born into Bavaria’s elite in 1887, he cultivated the kind of influential networks that only a man of taste, connections, and nerve could build—positioning himself at the intersection of art, commerce, and power during decades of seismic historical change.
A lifelong Münchener through and through, Hanfstaengl remained rooted in his native city even as empires crumbled and ideologies clashed around him. His work as a businessman and art dealer kept him embedded in the circles that shaped Bavaria’s cultural landscape across nearly a century of transformation. When he died in 1975 at eighty-eight, he left behind a legacy woven into Munich’s own story—a man who watched history unfold from the inside and lived to tell about it.
