Ernst Krenek 1900 – 1991
Biography
Ernst Krenek was the restless musical explorer who refused to be pinned down by a single style. Born in Vienna in 1900 during the city’s golden age of composition, he became a towering figure of twentieth-century classical music—a composer who fearlessly pivoted between genres and techniques when most artists stuck to one lane. His nearly nine-decade career took him from the musical ferment of imperial Austria to America, where he remained a creative force, constantly reinventing his approach as modernism itself transformed around him.
What set Krenek apart was his radical openness to new sounds and methods. While lesser composers clung to tradition or chased trends, he engaged seriously with evolving compositional techniques, staying restless and relevant from the Roaring Twenties through the postwar era and beyond. He kept writing, kept experimenting, kept pushing until his death in Palm Springs at ninety-one, leaving behind an enormous catalog that documented an entire century of musical possibility.
