Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne 1727 – 1794
Biography
Born into Parisian aristocracy in 1727, Étienne Charles de Loménie de Brienne carved out a distinguished career in the Catholic Church, rising to the prestigious rank of cardinal. He devoted nearly seven decades to ecclesiastical service during one of Europe’s most turbulent periods—navigating the seismic shifts of the late eighteenth century with steady commitment to his pastoral duties. His prominence in French religious circles reflected both his family’s influence and his own dedication to the faith.
De Brienne spent his final years anchored in Sens, where he continued his ecclesiastical responsibilities amid the revolutionary upheaval transforming France. He died there in February 1794 at an advanced age, having witnessed extraordinary transformations across both Church and society. Interred with appropriate honors at the Basilique Saint-Savinien de Sens, he embodied the old guard of French ecclesiastical authority—a cardinal whose life traced the arc from the ancien régime’s spiritual establishment to an era that would fundamentally challenge it.
