Biography

Born in the village of N’Gokro in 1905, Félix Houphouët-Boigny became the architect of modern Ivory Coast, steering his nation from colonial rule to independence and beyond. As the country’s first president—a position he held from 1960 until his death in 1993—he shaped the nation’s institutions and charted its course through three transformative decades of African history. His three-decade tenure made him one of the continent’s longest-serving leaders, a figure who dominated West African politics during the Cold War era.

Houphouët-Boigny’s legacy rested on his vision for Ivory Coast’s development and his efforts to establish stable governance during Africa’s most volatile period. He guided the country through its formative years as a sovereign nation, working to build national frameworks that would define its identity. On December 7, 1993, at age eighty-eight, he died of prostate cancer in Yamoussoukro, the capital he had championed. His passing closed a defining chapter in Ivorian history, leaving behind the imprint of a founding father whose influence shaped the nation’s trajectory.
