Francesco Buhagiar 1876 – 1934
Biography
Francesco Buhagiar commanded Malta’s political stage as Prime Minister during a pivotal era in the island nation’s history. Born in the quiet village of Qrendi in 1876, he rose through the ranks to claim the island’s highest office, steering the Mediterranean nation through the turbulent early decades of the twentieth century. His tenure marked a critical chapter in Malta’s journey toward self-determination, as the island navigated its relationship with Britain and its own identity.
Buhagiar’s legacy endures in Maltese political memory as a figure who shaped his nation during transformative times. His leadership reflected the intellectual currents and nationalist aspirations of his generation. When he passed away in St. Julian’s in 1934, Malta lost a statesman whose influence had left an indelible mark on the archipelago’s governance and political consciousness. He was laid to rest at Addolorata Cemetery in Paola, where he remains part of Malta’s honored dead.
