Francis II 1435 – 1488
Biography
Born into privilege at Château de Clisson in 1435, Francis II seized his destiny as Duke of Brittany, one of fifteenth-century France’s most coveted titles. He dominated Breton political life during a pivotal era when regional dukes wielded genuine power, shaping the cultural and political landscape of his domain with the authority of true nobility. His ducal seat made him a central figure in the intricate dance of medieval European politics.
On September 18, 1488, a tragic horseback riding accident in Couëron cut short his reign. The fall that killed Francis II also ended an era—his death marked a turning point for the duchy he’d commanded. His final resting place at Nantes Cathedral cemented his legacy as a titan of late medieval Brittany, a leader whose influence extended far beyond his relatively brief lifetime.
