Biography

François de Charette was born on May 2, 1763, in Couffé, France, during a time of significant social and political transformation. He would become known as a military leader of considerable prominence, rising to command Royalist forces during one of the most turbulent periods in French history.

During the War in the Vendée, Charette emerged as a central figure in the Royalist resistance movement. His leadership of the Royalist army reflected his commitment to the monarchist cause during the French Revolution, a period when France was deeply divided between revolutionary and traditional forces. The conflict in the Vendée region was marked by intense fighting and profound consequences for all involved.

Charette’s life ended tragically on March 26, 1796, in Nantes, when he was killed by gunshot wound. His death marked the conclusion of a brief but significant military career that had left an indelible mark on the region and its people. Though his burial place remains unrecorded in available sources, his role in the Royalist movement of the Vendée ensured his place in French historical memory during this pivotal era of national upheaval.
