Biography

Frank Auerbach fled Nazi Berlin as a child, arriving in Britain with nothing but his survival and an artistic hunger that would define decades of relentless creation. The German-born painter became a master of impasto—those thick, obsessive layers of paint that transformed ordinary London streets and studio interiors into visceral, almost violent celebrations of observation. His work demanded everything: hour after hour hunched over the same subjects, the same models, extracting something raw and true from repetition itself.

Based in London from his youth onward, Auerbach carved out a singular vision in twentieth-century art, resisting fashion while commanding respect from peers and collectors alike. His paintings—dense, textured, emotionally charged—captured the grit and light of postwar Britain with an intensity few could match. Working steadily and deliberately, he proved that quiet dedication and formal rigor could still shake the art world awake.

Auerbach died in London in November 2024 at ninety-three, leaving behind a towering legacy of nearly seven decades of work. His paintings remain monuments to the power of looking closely, of commitment without compromise.
