Biography

The Vienna-born visionary who essentially invented the modern thriller, Fritz Lang transformed cinema from a novelty into an art form capable of exploring the darkest corners of the human psyche. His expressionist masterpieces—geometric, shadowy, psychologically complex—became the blueprint for everything from film noir to contemporary sci-fi, influencing directors who wouldn’t be born for decades after his early triumphs.

Lang’s career was a high-wire act across continents and eras. Working in 1920s Germany, he created *Metropolis*, a dystopian epic that still astonishes audiences with its visual ambition. Fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s, he reinvented himself in Hollywood, bringing that same psychological intensity to thrillers that redefined American suspense cinema. Whether depicting robot uprisings or the paranoia of surveillance states, Lang had an uncanny gift for capturing anxieties before society fully recognized them.

By the time he died in 1976, Lang had spent nearly sixty years reshaping what cinema could be—transforming it from entertainment into prophecy. His influence courses through every suspenseful frame made since.
