George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle 1773 – 1848
Biography
George Howard, the 6th Earl of Carlisle, embodied the refined power of Georgian-era British aristocracy during a transformative period in English history. Born into one of England’s most storied families at the magnificent Castle Howard in 1773, Howard navigated the political landscape of late 18th and early 19th-century Britain as a member of Parliament. His life spanned seven decades of tumultuous change—from the American Revolution through the Napoleonic Wars to the dawn of the Industrial Age.
A figure of considerable influence within the upper echelons of British society, Howard left his mark through political engagement and stewardship of one of the nation’s architectural treasures. He spent his entire life intimately connected to Castle Howard, the Yorkshire estate synonymous with his family’s legacy. When he passed away in 1848 at the venerable age of 75, Howard was interred at the family mausoleum, a fitting resting place for a man whose entire existence was woven into the fabric of English aristocratic tradition and national history.
