Biography

Gerald FitzGerald commanded Ireland like few men before him. As Lord Deputy, the 9th Earl wielded extraordinary power across the emerald isle, his authority radiating from his base at Maynooth. Born into one of Ireland’s most formidable families in 1487, FitzGerald inherited a legacy of influence and proceeded to reshape the political landscape of Tudor Ireland with calculated ambition and aristocratic swagger.

His reign at the helm of Irish governance made him a towering figure of the era—a man whose decisions rippled across the Irish Sea and reached the English throne itself. But power, especially in Tudor times, was a precarious game. FitzGerald’s story ended in the Tower of London in 1534, where he died at 47. He found his final rest in the Church of St Peter ad Vincula, entombed among history’s most consequential prisoners, a fitting monument to a life lived at the nexus of ambition and peril.
