Biography

Giovanni Verga revolutionized Italian literature by turning his gaze toward ordinary Sicilians—the peasants, fishermen, and working poor whose stories had never commanded the attention of serious writers. Born in Catania in 1840, Verga spent decades mining his native Sicily’s depths, crafting narratives that stripped away romantic sentiment to expose raw human struggle. His unflinching portrayals of rural life became the cornerstone of Italian realism, influencing generations of writers and cementing his place as a titan of nineteenth-century letters.

Verga’s career spanned decades, yet he remained tethered to Sicily’s culture and landscape, channeling that intimacy into work of remarkable authenticity and power. He didn’t merely observe his subjects—he inhabited their world, translating their dialect, their hopes, their desperation into literature that resonated across Italy and beyond. When he died in Catania on January 27, 1922, following a stroke at eighty-one, he left behind a body of work that had permanently altered how Italian literature understood itself.
