Biography

Givi Chokheli was a Soviet footballer who embodied Georgia’s athletic spirit during the Cold War era. Born in 1937 in Telavi, deep in the Kakheti region, Chokheli came of age when Georgian athletes were carving out their place within the vast USSR sports machinery. He represented the rich football traditions of his homeland during a pivotal period in Soviet athletic history, contributing to a legacy that would outlast the empire itself.

Chokheli’s life spanned some of history’s most turbulent decades—from Stalin’s grip through the Cold War tensions and into Georgia’s dramatic push for independence. He spent much of his life in Tbilisi, witnessing his nation’s transformation from Soviet republic to sovereign state. When he passed away in February 1994, Georgia was just beginning its journey as a free nation, a transition Chokheli had lived to see.

Today, his memory rests at the Saburtalo Pantheon in Tbilisi’s Vake district, a final resting place reserved for Georgia’s notable citizens. Though the specifics of his athletic achievements remain understated in the historical record, Chokheli’s place among Soviet-era footballers stands as a testament to Georgia’s enduring sporting heritage and its athletes who carried that pride through an entire century of change.
