Biography

Born in Kyiv’s vibrant Jewish community, Golda Meir transformed herself from a schoolteacher and kibbutz pioneer into one of the twentieth century’s most formidable political leaders. Her ascent through Israel’s political ranks culminated in her appointment as Prime Minister in 1969, making her only the fourth woman to lead a nation at that time. During her tenure until 1974, Meir steered Israel through the Yom Kippur War and navigated treacherous Cold War geopolitics with an iron resolve that defined her public persona.

Meir’s leadership style—direct, uncompromising, and fiercely protective of Israel’s security interests—commanded respect and controversy in equal measure. She embodied the pioneering spirit of Israel’s founding generation, having lived through the nation’s birth and early struggles. Her decisions during wartime and peacetime negotiations continue to spark debate among historians and policymakers worldwide.

On December 8, 1978, Meir died of leukemia in West Jerusalem at age 80. She was buried at Mount Herzl, among Israel’s most revered leaders—a fitting resting place for a woman whose life traced the extraordinary arc of Jewish history from Eastern Europe to statehood.
