Biography

Born into royal privilege in 1330, Gongmin ascended to the throne of Goryeo at a pivotal moment in Korean history. As the thirty-first king of the dynasty, he inherited a realm navigating complex political currents and dynastic pressures. Though historical records offer limited detail about his specific accomplishments, Gongmin’s reign represented a crucial chapter in Goryeo’s storied legacy—a monarchy stretching back centuries that shaped the cultural and political foundations of the Korean peninsula.

Gongmin ruled from his birthplace of Kaesong, the ancient heart of Goryeo, where he devoted his life to the kingdom’s governance during turbulent times. His forty-four years witnessed transformative shifts in East Asian politics, and his role as sovereign carried the weight of maintaining dynastic continuity through shifting circumstances. When he died in November 1374, Goryeo honored him with interment at the Royal Tombs—a final resting place reserved for Korea’s crowned elite.

Today, Gongmin’s memory endures through his position in the unbroken succession of Goryeo’s rulers, a testament to a dynasty whose influence extended far beyond its own era. His tomb stands as a physical anchor to medieval Korean history.
