Gonzalo Rojas 1917 – 2011
Biography
Born in the salt-spray town of Lebu in 1917, Gonzalo Rojas became the literary conscience of Chile—a poet and writer whose voice shaped generations of readers and writers across nearly a century. His gift wasn’t just for crafting words on a page; it was for igniting them in minds. As a professor, Rojas became legendary for mentoring emerging talent, transforming classrooms into creative laboratories where Chilean literature was constantly being reimagined and renewed.
Rojas never stopped writing, never stopped teaching, never stopped pushing the boundaries of what Chilean letters could be. His presence in intellectual and artistic circles remained vital well into his later years, a testament to an unshakeable commitment to the craft. When he died in Santiago in April 2011 at 93, cerebrovascular disease claimed a titan—but not his influence. His literary legacy continues to pulse through Chilean culture, echoing in the work of countless writers he touched.
