Biography

Granville Sharp was born on November 10, 1735, in Durham, England, during a time when the transatlantic slave trade flourished with little legal opposition. His life would become defined by an unwavering commitment to justice and human dignity. Though his early years are not extensively documented, Sharp’s conscience was awakened to the moral catastrophe of slavery, setting him on a path that would lead him to become one of England’s most significant abolitionists.

Throughout his life, Sharp dedicated himself to challenging the institution of slavery through legal argument, public advocacy, and tireless activism. He worked to expose the contradictions inherent in a supposedly Christian nation that permitted human bondage, and his efforts contributed to shifting public opinion on this grave moral question. His determination helped lay the groundwork for the abolitionist movement that would eventually transform British society.

Sharp died in London on July 6, 1813, having witnessed the first steps toward change, though the complete abolition of slavery in the British Empire would not come until 1833—twenty years after his death. He was laid to rest at All Saints Churchyard in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, where his tomb stands as a testament to a life devoted to freedom and justice. His legacy endures as an inspiration to those who work for human rights and equality.
