Biography

Guillaume de Villaret was born on January 1, 1300, in Allenc, a town in the Gevaudan region of France. He came from a noble family with deep ties to the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, one of the most influential military and religious orders of the medieval Mediterranean. His life was devoted to the service of this order, which played a crucial role in defending Christian interests during the Crusades.

Rising through the ranks of the Hospitallers, Guillaume held significant positions of leadership within the organization. He served as Grand Prior of Saint-Gilles, representing the Langue de Provence—one of the order’s administrative divisions—from 1270 to 1300. His reputation and dedication earned him further advancement, and he was elected Grand Master of the Hospitallers, the highest position within the order, serving from 1286 until his death.

Guillaume’s most notable achievement came near the end of his life when he initiated the siege of Rhodes in 1306, a campaign that would reshape the strategic position of the Hospitallers in the Eastern Mediterranean. He died on September 1, 1306, in Limassol, Cyprus, while still serving as Grand Master. His leadership during a transformative period left a lasting mark on the history of the order.
