Biography

Günther Anders was the twentieth century’s prophet of technological anxiety. This German-Austrian philosopher spent nine decades wrestling with humanity’s most urgent question: how do we stay human in an increasingly mechanized world? Born in Wrocław in 1902, Anders emerged as a towering intellectual voice, obsessively examining the collision between human existence and modern technology—a preoccupation that would define both his work and his era.

Anders’s long career, anchored in Vienna, positioned him at the intersection of philosophy and activism. He didn’t just theorize about progress and modernity; he interrogated them with an urgency that feels prophetic today. His relentless focus on technology’s existential grip over civilization made him essential reading for anyone grappling with what it means to be human when machines reshape society faster than philosophy can explain it.

When Anders died in Vienna in 1992, at ninety, he left behind decades of uncompromising philosophical work. His legacy endures among thinkers who refuse to accept technological change as inevitable progress—who, like Anders himself, insist on asking the harder question: at what cost?
