Biography

Rising from rural Maine to the nation’s second-highest office, Hannibal Hamlin became one of 19th-century America’s most influential political figures. Born in Paris, Maine in 1809, Hamlin climbed through state and federal ranks to secure the vice presidency, serving alongside Abraham Lincoln from 1861 to 1865—arguably the most turbulent four years in American history. His presence in the White House during the Civil War placed him squarely at the center of the nation’s greatest constitutional crisis.

Hamlin’s 82-year life spanned nearly a century of American transformation. He witnessed the nation’s expansion, contraction, and ultimate preservation through one of history’s bloodiest internal conflicts. When he died on Independence Day 1891, the nation lost a living link to its founding generation. Laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor, Hamlin’s legacy remained inscribed in the historical record as a steadying force during America’s most defining era.
