Biography

Hanns Martin Schleyer rose to prominence as one of postwar Germany’s most influential industrial titans, commanding respect as president of a major industry association and wielding considerable power in the nation’s business establishment. His trajectory embodied the reconstruction and economic resurgence of West Germany during the Cold War era.

In September 1977, Schleyer’s carefully constructed world shattered when the Red Army Faction, a militant terrorist organization, abducted him in a stunning act of political violence. The RAF demanded the release of imprisoned comrades, turning Schleyer into a pawn in Germany’s most volatile political crisis. Despite desperate negotiations by authorities, the standoff ended brutally: Schleyer was executed on October 18, 1977, in Mulhouse, France.

His death became emblematic of 1970s Germany’s internal terror campaign—a stark collision between industrial establishment power and radical revolutionary violence. Buried at Ostfilder cemetery, Schleyer’s legacy crystallizes a turbulent era when extremism threatened the nation’s stability, forever linking his name to both corporate influence and Cold War tragedy.
