Biography

Hasui Kawase was born on May 18, 1883, in Shiba-ku, during a transformative period in Japanese art and culture. He would become one of Japan’s most celebrated ukiyo-e artists, continuing a centuries-old tradition of woodblock printing during the modern era. His work represented a bridge between classical Japanese artistic methods and contemporary subject matter, earning him recognition as a significant figure in the evolution of this distinctive art form.

Throughout his career, Kawase distinguished himself as both an accomplished artist and skilled printmaker, mastering the technical complexities of ukiyo-e production. His contributions to the medium helped sustain and revitalize traditional printmaking practices during a time when many ancient arts were being displaced by Western influences.

Hasui Kawase passed away on November 7, 1957, in Ota at the age of seventy-four, succumbing to stomach cancer. His legacy endures through his body of work and his role in preserving Japanese artistic heritage. He was laid to rest at Manpuku-ji Temple in Setagaya, Japan, where his memory continues to be honored.
