Hedda Sterne 1910 – 2011
Biography
Hedda Sterne painted her way through the twentieth century, becoming one of the most fearless abstractionists of the postwar era. Born in Bucharest in 1910, she fled Europe’s darkness and landed in New York, where she joined the city’s explosive art scene and exhibited alongside the Abstract Expressionists who were redefining modern art. Her bold, energetic canvases didn’t just hang in galleries—they challenged what painting could be, earning her a place among the avant-garde revolutionaries reshaping American culture.
For over seven decades, Sterne remained a vital creative force, painting with uncompromising vision through decades of artistic movements and cultural upheaval. She witnessed and shaped the birth of Abstract Expressionism, refused to be sidelined by the male-dominated art world, and kept creating until the very end of her remarkably long life. When she died in Manhattan at 100 years old, she left behind a legacy of innovation and independence that continues to inspire artists today.
