Helü -550 – -495
Biography
Helü was born on January 1, 550 BCE in Suzhou, during an era of great transformation in ancient China. He would go on to become one of the most significant rulers of the state of Wu, ascending to the throne in 514 BCE and governing until 496 BCE. As the twenty-fourth king of Wu, Helü inherited a realm with considerable potential and worked to establish it as a formidable power during the Spring and Autumn Period.
During his reign, Helü oversaw developments that would shape the state of Wu for generations to come. His leadership came at a pivotal moment in Chinese history, when regional kingdoms competed for influence and resources. Though specific details of his policies and accomplishments remain sparse in historical records, his extended tenure as king—spanning eighteen years—suggests he maintained relative stability and authority within his domain.
Helü passed away on January 1, 495 BCE, ending a life span of fifty-five years marked by his service to the state of Wu. The exact circumstances of his death were not recorded in surviving historical documents, and the location of his burial remains unknown. Nevertheless, his place in the chronology of Wu’s rulers ensures his memory within China’s rich dynastic heritage.
