Biography

Henri Tomasi was born on August 17, 1901, in Marseille, a vibrant port city on the Mediterranean coast. From his early years in this culturally rich region, he developed a deep connection to music that would define his life’s work. Over the course of his career, he became known as both a talented composer and skilled conductor, contributing meaningfully to French musical life during the twentieth century.

Throughout his professional years, Tomasi dedicated himself to creating compositions and interpreting the works of others through his conducting. His dual talents allowed him to shape musical expression from both sides of the podium, earning respect among his peers and audiences alike. Based in Paris during much of his career, he remained an active figure in the city’s musical community.

Tomasi passed away on January 13, 1971, in Paris’s 9th arrondissement, ending a life devoted to his craft. His final resting place was chosen in Penta-di-Casinca in Haute-Corse, reflecting perhaps a connection to his Mediterranean roots. Though his time on earth concluded nearly five decades ago, his contributions to French composition and conducting remain part of his enduring legacy.
