Herbert Hoover 1874 – 1964
Biography
Herbert Hoover shot to fame as a self-made mining engineer and international humanitarian before pivoting to politics. He became the 31st President at the worst possible moment—taking office in 1929 just as the stock market crashed, plunging the nation into the Great Depression. Though his presidency lasted only one term, it defined an era and left an indelible mark on American consciousness.
Hoover’s nearly century-long life witnessed seismic shifts in American history, from industrial boom to economic catastrophe to global conflict. After leaving the White House in 1933, he remained a public figure and elder statesman for decades. When he died from internal bleeding at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York on October 20, 1964, at ninety, he left behind a complex legacy as both visionary businessman and polarizing political figure whose name became synonymous with economic crisis.
