Hilton Valentine 1943 – 2021
Biography
Hilton Valentine’s name became synonymous with the raw, electrifying guitar sound that defined The Animals, the Newcastle-born group that stormed the mid-1960s with their gritty British blues-rock assault. His jagged, iconic riff on “House of the Rising Sun” didn’t just top charts—it rewired what rock guitar could be, proving that you didn’t need technical perfection to create something unforgettable. Valentine’s playing was pure attitude, all sharp edges and street-level authenticity.
Born in the shipbuilding town of North Shields in 1943, Valentine channeled the industrial grit of his northeast England roots directly into his instrument. The Animals were more than just a band; they were cultural insurgents who brought American blues to screaming British teenagers and sent it rocketing back across the Atlantic. Valentine’s contribution to that seismic moment in rock history—that visceral, unpolished power—became a blueprint for generations of guitarists.
Valentine remained devoted to music throughout his life, eventually settling in Wallingford where he stayed connected to his craft and community. He died on January 29, 2021, at 77, leaving behind a legacy as essential and defiant as that first, legendary riff.
