Hissène Habré 1942 – 2021
Biography
Hissène Habré rose to power as Chad’s fifth president, stepping into one of Africa’s most volatile political arenas during a transformative era. Born in the northern desert town of Faya-Largeau in 1942, Habré navigated the treacherous currents of Chadian governance, confronting the country’s deep regional fractures and internal instability during his tenure at the nation’s helm.
His political journey reflected the broader struggles of post-colonial Chad—a nation wrestling with competing interests and systemic challenges. Habré’s presidency placed him squarely in the center of these historic tensions, shaping a critical chapter in the country’s development.
In his later years, Habré sought refuge in Dakar, Senegal, far from his birthplace. He died there on August 24, 2021, at 79, succumbing to COVID-19 during the pandemic’s grip on the world. He was buried in Yoff, establishing his final resting place in the adopted country that had sheltered him through his final decades.
